Another security certificate problem

I am trying to access a local Linux server on my home network from ie9 on Windows 7 (Ultimate) and ie8 on XP(SP3). On ie9, I simply cannot get past the "Continue to this website" on the "Problem with this site's security certificate" screen. I have been accessing the server routinely for months using Firefox (https login toserver_name:10000), so that part of it works. But for various reasons, I would like to be able to use ie as the access mechanism. I have placed the server's url in my trusted sites list, and screwed the security settings for that zone to Low, but to no avail. Similar queries contain the advice that I should be able to proceed by clicking on "Continue...." but I cannot get past this point.  On the XP machine, I simply get the incredibly helpful message  "IE cannot display the webpage" (which is what I also get on ie9 if I omit the port number). Where do I look next?
