snap.do infection causes ie 10 to stop working before opening

Running i.e. explorer 10--installed in an effort to escape snap.do virus;  OS windows 7 64 bit.

Virus previously inserted snap.do url in start address in ie explorer 9, but it could be avoided by manually choosing another seach e.g. bing or google.  Virus scan programs such as malwarebytes and trend micro housecall could not find anything.  There is no program called snap do or smartbar or unknown in the uninstall programs list of the control panel.

I hoped that uninstalling i.e. explorer  9 and reinstalling it would get rid of the problem. (Uninstalling being done by unchecking the box in window features.)  However, i.e.9 download file would not install because it said I already had a later version.  In desperaton I downloaded and installed ie 10.  This installed sucessfully.  However, on opening the program, it immediately tries to load snap.do into the start page. The url I copied is  http://feed.snap.do/?publisher=SnapdoOpenCandy&dpid=SnapdoOpenCandy&co=US&userid=edb82286-a9eb-44ca-bcce-f980e96b4579&searchtype=hp. A notification comes up saying internet explorer has stopped working--shortly it says windows will close the program.  It does not close it, and multiple notifications appear as the virus tries to open other tabs.  However, internet explorer can be manually closed by clicking on the close program box.

Since internet explorer is being closed by windows before it can really open, I have no opportunity to try to change the start page or search options.

I was about to try to uninstall ie10 when I decided to ask for help--I am afraid that I will be unable to install any version of internet explorer once this one is uninstalled. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
