Default webpage font no longer displays correctly

(Windows 7, IE v9, updates/patches installed)

I'm Windows savvy, but need some help finding the problem.  This happens in both IE and Firefox, so it points toward a more global Windows issue.  When I allow the browser to choose a display font, it chooses a razor-thin san-serif font that is almost impossible to read.  When I manually choose the browser fonts, they display correctly.  In the past, it would use the standard Arial/Tahoma/Calibri type font like you see in the text you're reading right now and I don't know what has changed.  Somewhere there must be a Windows .ini file that's pointing to the wrong font as the default browser font.  Where can I find this setting or is there some other solution.
