The problem in 15 words: Current IEX v.6 browser won't open; can't update it unless it DOES open. Thus: Stuck.
The problem, fully explained:
In the "Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10" forum, I tried the following search term: "Internet Explorer 8 installation failed default browser."
That search term did not yield any answers that address my problem.
Here is my system:
XP Version 2000 SP2
Dell Latitude D630
Intel Core Duo 2.0 GHz
RAM 2GB
The current version of IEX is 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp.050329-1536
It won't open. Continually starts off with "needs to close" message, and asks whether I want to send an error report. It also fails to leave a .txt copy of the error reoprt in the specified temp directory -- otherwise I would post it here. This problem persists
despite repeated re-boots of the entire system.
Onto a separate computer, I downloaded the IEX 8 installer from the Microsoft site. Placed the installer on a USB stick, transferred the stick to my target computer, moved the installer file to the desktop, and ejected the USB stick.
When I attempt to run the installer, I continually run into this message:
"Internet Explorer could not install because your computer failed to install a required update. Please click on the Download button below to manually install the update."
When I click on the download button, I get the following error message:
"Setup could not start your default web browser."
Well, yes. I know. That's why I'm trying to REPLACE my default web browser -- because it won't start.
How can I replace a browser that won't start if, as part of the replacement process, it is required to start?
I run into this same roadblock when I choose the option NOT to install updates during the installation process.
