NUMBER FOLDER AND ITEMS IN EXPLORER FOLDERS AUTOMATICALLY

I want to automatically number the folders and subfolders similar to an outline sort of like this:

A  "First Folder Name"

      A.001 "FIRST DOCUMENT NAME"

       B.002 "SECOND DOCUMENT NAME" ETC

A.A1. "FIRST SUBFOLDER NAME"

     A.A1.001 "FIRST DOCUMENT IN SUBFOLDER A1 NAME"

    A.A1.002  "SECOND DOCUMENT IN SUBFOLDER NAME. ETC

A.A2 SECOND SUBFOLDER NAME" ETC

B "SECOND FOLDER NAME" SAME LOGIC AS ABOVE FOR NUMBERING.

I want to be able to pick the folder that I create the numbering system for.

I have Vista and 2003 (two seperate machine)

Is this possible to do automatically?  I have hundreds of documents that need to be indexed and I really don't want to do it manually unless I absolute have to.
